Main Aims/Objectives

Introduction to the relations between material expression and architectural expression of the built space. To foster the critical sense of the student in understanding the relevance of the material and constructive component in the formalization and concretization of the architectural discourse of the constructed space.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Introduction to the instruments of constructive representation and a set of essential knowledge in the material field of architecture and its built spaces. Introduction to the reading of architecture in its material condition and the means of apprehending the constructive aspects of architecture.

Skills to be acquired

Critical sensitivity for the relations between material expression and architectural expression. Understanding of materials in the construction of architectural space. Acquisition of instruments at the level of materiality that support the activity of architecture.

Teaching Procedures

The works are developed through the articulation of theoretical and practical moments. In the theoretical classes will be presented the exercises to be done, introduced the topics and information necessary to advance the work, as well as periodically made presentations and discussion of results. In the practical classes will be implemented and executed exercises proposed, presented, analyzed, criticized and discussed, in group or individually, the progress of the work.

Programme

- Introduction to the themes of the relations between material expression and architectural expression.
- Introduction to the problem of construction and the constructive complexity of built space.
- Introduction to the questions of representation and legibility of the space projected from the constructive aspects.
- Introduction to the theme of available materials and technologies.

Evaluation Type

By the very character of the discipline, the evaluation will be continuous and permanent. In this sense, attention will be taken to attendance, participation in classes, regularity and continuity of work, the response to problems and challenges. There will also be continuous evaluation of two written tests and delivery of papers, according to the school calendar. The fundamental moments of evaluation will be fulfilled: the Frequency Test and the Final Exam.

Teaching Resources

In order to achieve the required objectives and competences, the following teaching resources will be used:
- Computers;
- Specialized bibliography and available in the media library and library of the University Lusíada;
- Indication of key texts for the learning and preparation of the research work;
- Multimedia material (documentaries, images, etc.).
