Main Aims/Objectives

The Materials discipline has as its general objectives, the introduction to the relations between material expression and architectural expression of the built space.
Promote the student´s critical sense in understanding the relevance of the material and constructive component in the formalization and concretization of the architectural discourse of the built space.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Introduction to the instruments of constructive representation and a set of essential knowledge in the material field of architecture and its built spaces. Introduction to the reading of architecture in its material condition and the means of understanding the construction aspects of architecture.

Skills to be acquired

Critical sensitivity to the relationship between material expression and architectural expression.
Understanding of materials in the construction of architectural space. Acquisition of instruments in terms of materiality that support the activity of architecture.

Teaching Procedures

The works are developed through the articulation of theoretical and practical moments. In the theoretical classes, the exercises to be carried out will be presented, the topics and information necessary for the progress of the works will be introduced, as well as periodic presentations and debate of results. In the practical classes, the proposed exercises will be implemented and performed, presented, analyzed, criticized and discussed, in group or individually, the progress of the work.

Programme

Survey, analysis, investigation and study of two existing buildings on the Campus of Universidade Lusíada Norte, Porto.
This first phase of the exercise will be carried out by groups of three students, with the task of lifting two buildings, built at different times.
Each group will be responsible for carrying out the survey and the respective registration with the hand raised, from a section of the building, for subsequent rigorous representation.
Each section to be studied by the different groups of students, must include, necessarily, interior spaces and their organization, as well as the corresponding architectural image.
The syllabus of the Materials Course is divided into three phases:

1st Phase - Survey
1. Hand-drawn representation of the section of the corresponding building in plan with the planimetric information of the interior spaces, vertical section and elevation [s] with altimetric information.
2. The survey drawings must contain, the partial and total dimensions, in meters, of the spaces and sections surveyed and identification of the main materials, which constitute the constructive nature of the building.
3. Synthesis of images related to the building recognition processes to be characterized, namely through the reproduction of sketches, design schemes or photographs, among others.

2nd Phase - Rigorous representation
1. Plan, vertical section and elevation [s] 1:50 scale.
2. Other elements representative of the most significant spaces of the buildings.
3. Brief report dedicated to the analysis and interpretation from the various graphic pieces produced, [special importance to the study of the sections] identifying the importance of materiality in the form and constructive awareness of each of the buildings studied. This study must be associated with the reproduction of sketches, design schemes or photographs, among others.

3rd Phase - Model construction
1. Model of the section of the studied building 1:50 scale.
2. Brief report on the materials and techniques involved in the construction processes. This synthesis is intended to encourage the development of a? Constructive awareness? able to instill in the student a critical sense in relation to the life cycle of materials and corresponding conservation of the construction systems employed, in the two buildings studied.
The combination of the different sections performed, must represent the unit that constitutes the building studied by each group of students.

Evaluation Type

Due to the discipline´s character, the evaluation will be continuous and permanent. In this sense, attendance, participation in classes, regularity and continuity of work, the response to problems and challenges will be taken into account. Two written tests and assignments will also be included in the continuous assessment, according to the school calendar. The fundamental evaluation moments established will also be fulfilled: the Frequency Test and the Final Exam.

Teaching Resources

To achieve the required objectives and skills, the following teaching resources will be used:
- Computers;
- Specialized bibliography and available at the media library and library of Universidade Lusíada;
- Indication of fundamental texts for learning and elaborating research work;
- Multimedia material (documentaries, images, etc.);
- Laboratory classes that encourage research on building systems and materials.
