Main Aims/Objectives

Deepening the essential problems of the construction of the architecture, its formalization and concretization in the project.
Deepening the relations between the expression of materials and the architectural expression of the built space.
Understanding the role of materials in the formalization of an architectural discourse and the inherent complexity of the constructive process.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Deepening of the set of essential knowledge in the field of the use of the different types of materials with particular emphasis in the constructive systems used in the formulation of architectural space.
Deepening the reading of architecture in its material condition allowing students to deepen the essential means of apprehending the constructive aspects of architecture.

Skills to be acquired

Ability to interpret the role of the material in the construction of the architectural space.
Acquisition of operational instruments at the level of materiality that support the understanding of the project from the constructive aspects and its material meaning.
Ability to understand the role of materials as an integrated system in architecture.

Teaching Procedures

The works are developed through the articulation of theoretical and practical moments.
In the theoretical classes will be presented the exercises to be done, introduced the topics and information necessary to advance the work, as well as periodically made presentations and discussion of results. In the practical classes will be implemented and executed exercises proposed, presented, analyzed, criticized and discussed, in group or individually, the progress of the work.

Programme

Understanding of the architectural idea by the knowledge of the materials and constructive systems that supports it. The way of using the materials in elementary constructive systems carried out in the deepening relative to the chair of materials in the following topics to be addressed:
- the relationship between material expression and architectural expression.
- the constructive complexity of built space;
- from the problems of the project to the work for the issues of representation and readability of space
Projected from the constructive aspects.

Evaluation Type

By the very character of the discipline, the evaluation will be continuous and permanent. In this sense, attention will be taken to attendance, participation in classes, regularity and continuity of work, response to problems and challenges. There will also be continuous evaluation of two written tests / delivery of papers, according to the school calendar. The fundamental moments of evaluation instituted will be fulfilled: the Frequency Test and the Final Exam.

Teaching Resources

In order to achieve the required objectives and competences, the following teaching resources will be used:
- Computers;
- Specialized bibliography and available in the media library and library of the University Lusíada;
- Indication of key texts for the learning and elaboration of the research works;
- Multimedia material (documentaries, images, etc.).
