Main Aims/Objectives

The discipline of Applied Materials has as general objectives, the deepening of the essential problems of the construction of architecture, its formalization and concretization in project. Deepening of the relationship between the expression of materials and architectural expression.
Understanding the role of materials in formalizing an architectural discourse and the complexity inherent in the construction process.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Deepening of the set of essential knowledge in the field of the use of different types of materials with particular emphasis on the construction systems used in the formulation of architectural space.
Deepening the reading of architecture in its material condition, allowing students the essential means of understanding the construction aspects of architecture.

Skills to be acquired

Ability to interpret the role of the material in the construction of the architectural space.
Acquisition of operational instruments in terms of materiality that support the understanding of the project from the constructive aspects and its material sense. Ability to understand the role of materials as an integrated system in architecture.

Teaching Procedures

The works are developed through the articulation of theoretical and practical moments. In the theoretical classes, the exercises to be carried out will be presented, the topics and information necessary for the progress of the works will be introduced, as well as periodic presentations and debate of results. In the practical classes, the proposed exercises will be implemented and performed, presented, analyzed, criticized and discussed, in group or individually, the progress of the work.

Programme

Understanding of the architectural idea through the knowledge of the materials and construction systems that support it. The way in which materials are used in elementary construction systems carried out in the context of the Applied Materials Course is divided into three phases:

1st Phase - Case Study
This first phase of the exercise, will be carried out, by groups of three students, and it will be up to you to carry out the informative synthesis concerning the building recognition process to be characterized, namely through the reproduction of sketches, design schemes or photographs, among others, focusing on the following elements:
1. Urban insertion - Implementation, construction date, uses, architects involved, etc.].
General photographic records of the building´s façades [south, north, street, street, front, backyard, and others], in order to highlight the relationship between the different façades, their particular position, and the formal definition of the complex ;
2. Materiality - Identification of the main materials that define the constructive nature of the building:
roofs, exterior walls, [graphic records revealing the defining matrices of the facades], intermediate floors, ground floor and foundations.
3. Constructivity - Identification of the system [s] adopted [s] and other events of singular formalization, critically articulated, in order to highlight the relationship between different events, in the formal definition of the whole.

2nd Phase - Rigorous representation
The representation used in the analysis, investigation and study of the building, is now done with rigor. Reflection on the objectives of each representation technique, based on the observation and analysis of case studies.
1. The constructive cut must clearly identify the set of materials and systems used for roofs, exterior walls, window frames, connections to the intermediate floors and foundations;
2. Elevation with the identification of the main lining materials with their stereotomy and implication in the expression and characterization of the building.

3rd Phase - Model construction
The models must clearly indicate the set of materials and systems used for roofs, exterior walls, window frames, connections to intermediate floors and foundations.
1. The construction of the models representative of the constructive cut by the facade of each of the buildings studied, must be carried out from the specific graphic pieces, carried out during the second phase of the exercise.
2. The model´s elevation must express the main lining materials with their stereotomy and implications for the expression and characterization of the respective buildings.

Evaluation Type

Due to the discipline´s character, the evaluation will be continuous and permanent. In this sense, attendance, participation in classes, regularity and continuity of work, the response to problems and challenges will be taken into account. Two written tests and assignments will also be included in the continuous assessment, according to the school calendar. The fundamental evaluation moments established will also be fulfilled: the Frequency Test and the Final Exam.

Teaching Resources

To achieve the required objectives and skills, the following teaching resources will be used:
- Computers;
- Specialized bibliography and available at the media library and library of Universidade Lusíada;
- Indication of fundamental texts for learning and elaborating research work;
- Multimedia material (documentaries, images, etc.);
- Laboratory classes that encourage research on building systems and materials.

Sustainability Objectives

Keywords

applied materials, architectural form, architectural expression, constructive complexity.
