Main Aims/Objectives
Universal Design, or Inclusive Design, aims to design spaces (outer and inner space) that can be used and understood effectively, safely and comfortably to by all persons, regardless of age, ethnicity or physical ability.
Specific Aims/Objectives
Sensitization of students to equal rights and the right to difference; students are expected to be able to identify spatial accessibility and mobility issues (and other environmental issues); be able to conceptualize and design public spaces that ensure the full participation of its users, regardless of their skills and physical abilities.
Skills to be acquired
It is intended that students can recognize the constraints caused by the impact of spatial characteristics on users. That they can critically understand and analyze and articulate with the design process, the problems of spaces according to the principles of an inclusive universal design. Recognition of the role of the architect in the physical and social inclusion of cities. To this end, they are also expected to be able to interpret and apply the Decreto Lei nº 163/2006.
Teaching Procedures
The contents will be taught through oral, visual and interactive exposition, with subsequent analysis and consequent debate. Through examples related respectively to outer space and inner space, it is intended to complement theory with practice, namely with the development of two written tests and two practical exercises fully developed in class.
Programme
1. The two-way relationship between human beings and space.
2. Exclusion and inclusion (contextualization).
3. Architectural, social and cultural barriers.
4. The universal design. Methodologies for Universal Design.
5. The physical and psychological impact of a given space and consequent reactions and / or inhibitions by the user.
6. Identification of the individual with specific requirements.
7. Anthropometric, ergonomic and functional characterization of the user.
8. The Universal Charter of Human Rights, 1948. Legislation in force: Decree-Law No. 163/2006 of 8 August. Mobility and Accessibility Guide for all.
Evaluation Type
Continuous assessment will be supported by the following elements (taking into account the University´s General Knowledge Regulations):
1. attendance;
2. punctuality;
3. participation;
4. two written tests;
5. Two practical assignments (in class).
Teaching Resources
For the development / presentation / discussion of the syllabus the following resources will be used:
1. diverse bibliography with relevant information (texts, cartography, photographs, etc.);
2. projection of synthesized information (texts, cartography, photographs, etc.) into digital files (jpeg, pdf, ppt).
