Main Aims/Objectives
- Relate Ergonomics and Color with basic, useful and aesthetic knowledge in the Architecture Making of the present day.
- Understand the concept of color is mutable, subjective and condicioned by culture(s), despite the Science effort to approach its object.
Specific Aims/Objectives
- Recognize the prejudices and or the errors in the use, overuse and non-use of color.
- Infer the profitable connections between the Visual Arts and Architecture, in which concerns the use of color.
- Recognize when the color is part of Architecture and ends up being ornament and vice-versa.
Skills to be acquired
- Analyze objects from Past and Present and from a different geogrsph, in which color is concerned.
- Be able to distinguish and apply the following concepts: Ergonomics, Color, Light, Ornament.
- Produce a short original work/text.
Teaching Procedures
- Through seminars, one will explore the bibliography and the samples to analyze. The classes will be open to discussion and the students will be oriented to presentation and defense of individual/group works. Whenever possible, the classes will be complemented with study visits, conferences and other relevant activities.

1. The Ergonomics of Color / Introduction.
2. Basic concepts and Color theories.
3. The Color through time and place. Exploring some cases
4. The fusion between Visual Arts and Architecture in the 20th century and early 21th century. Exploring some cases.
5. The use, overuse and non-use of color in Architecture. Exploring some cases.
6. The urban and architectural color on Oporto. The methodological proposal for campus research.
Evaluation Type
- Written test with bibliographical support
- Critical review of an article.
- Regular attendance and active participation inside and outside the seminars (tutorials, conferences, study visits, etc.)
Teaching Resources
- Traditional and modern methods of proection.
- Movies, colloquies, exhibitions (inside or outside the University, but available in museums, galleries, foundations, fairs, etc) and study visits (in the region, Portugal or abroad).
