Main Aims/Objectives

Understanding the historical and sociological processes of urbanization phenomena.
Understanding the relationship between the phenomena of industrialization with urbanization processes.
Understanding the city as a space for economic production, social and collective consumption.
Understanding the city as a space of cultural consumption and representation of power llective struggles.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Understand the importance of the sociological perspective of the city in shaping the architect to be.
Understand the importance of sociological point of view of the city in urban space planning activities.

Skills to be acquired

Being able to integrate the sociological perspective of cities in the urban space planning work.
Being able to plan the urban space in terms of quality of life and well-being of the populations.
Being able to plan the urban space in terms of technical innovation and as a space of aesthetic utopia.

Lectures by faculty.
Study and discussion of texts.
Study and discussion of case studies of domestic and foreign cities.

1. The city in the historical and sociological tradition:
1.1. Urban Sociology as an interdisciplinary area and as an area of cross knowledge.
1.2. The cities in History and their cultural representations.
1.3. Cities in the sociological tradition: The European Tradition and the School of Chicago.
1.4. The polysemy of the city.
1.5. For a definition of the city.


2. Social imbalances:
2.1. The city as a system of production and consumption: Fordist period, post-fordist period and period of flexible capitalism.
2.2. The city as fragmented space.
2.3. The Fordo-Keynesian-Corbusian city.
2.4. The new urban poverty.
2.5. The urban dualism.
2.6. Social housing (the social housing policy of Estado Novo and SAAL).

3. Urban configurations:
3.1. The city divided, fragmented and reconfigured.
3.2. The walled city of Edward Soja and the gated communities.
3.3. The City of Fear and the Architecture of Fear by Mike Davis.
3.4. The panoptic city.

4. The postmodern city. The city Spectacle:
4.1. The disneylandization of the city.
4.2. The competitive city.

5. The city and citizenship: from technique to aesthetics.

Evaluation Type

Continuous assessment follows the parameters of existing legislation.
- Two tests of continuous assessment;
- Attendance, oral participation and interest in the discipline.
