Main Aims/Objectives

Raise awareness for the fact that the impending crisis – due to the constant reduction of the amount of oil available – should stimulate the demand for other energy sources and its preservation in all stages of construction.
Raise awareness for the fact that the buildings should participate more and more efficiently in the energy production.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Raise awareness for the fact that the challenge humanity faces about the environmental changes – triggered partially by the construction’s and industrial production’s footprint – can only be exceed trough sustainable development.
Raise awareness among the students for the consumption factors of a building and the main parameters of Passive Architecture.

Skills to be acquired

Acquisition of a respectful environmental awareness and the comprehension that sustainability is a transdisciplinary ideal.
Knowledge of the main Passive Architecture parameters.
Usage of solar charts, in Passive Architecture and in Bioclimatic Architecture.

Teaching Procedures

The classes should raise learning, discussion, debate and, above all, questioning of the students about the absolute need to preserve the environment and the natural resources. Texts, pictures and drawings will be used.

Environment and sustainability.
Environmental Laws, in Portugal.
The desirable integration of sectorial policies in a sustainable development.
The risk created in the environment and in ecology that comes from the development focused on economic growth.
The social development as a necessary condition for sustainable development.
The foundations of social development.
The precautionary principle in assessing the impact of human intervention in the environment.
Sustainability and the preservation of natural resources.
The environmental problems related with the intensive use of the automobile.
Social and environmental costs in the construction of fast traffic roads.
Sustainability, accessibility, mobility and hierarchy of the means of transport in cities.
Passive Architecture.
The main parameters of Passive Architecture.
Control of insolation of the facades facing south.
Solar Geometry.
The usage of solar charts in Passive Architecture and in Bioclimatic Architecture.


Evaluation Type

Evaluation will follow what is specified in the University’s General Evaluation Agreement. Besides the frequency examination and the test examination, there will be periodically evaluations having into account two written tests. Other factors, such as, the participation in the lessons and the research made by the students, will be taken into account as well.

Teaching Resources

It will be frequent the usage of informatics, diverse bibliography, reflexive texts, drawings, photographs and cartography.
