Main Aims/Objectives
The discipline comes after a route already undertaken by the European architecture, supported in the disciplines of history taught in previous years of the undergraduate curriculum. Thus, the key issues of evolution, characterization and understanding of national and international historical time itself is as essential to the understanding of Portuguese architecture.
Specific Aims/Objectives
It is intended to assess the problem of architecture produced in Portugal during the medieval period and its relationship with the corresponding international architectural production. Set up a profile of Portuguese architecture, highlighting its specificity and characterization of its own, seeking to define an aesthetics of architecture and of the Portuguese city.
Skills to be acquired
Knowledge of architecture and history as a cultural phenomenon. Knowledge of architecture as a scientific phenomenon, taking into account the sources and the validity and use, methods and techniques.
Teaching Procedures
Expository method: using various materials, enabling the transmission of knowledge in a structured and continuous manner. Interrogative method: systematically questioning the students.
Active method: the students must take the problem solving initiative in order to allow better consolidation of acquired knowledge.

I - General Issues of Portuguese architecture. History, man and the territory.
II - The Middle Ages
1 - The historical situation-The Formation of Portugal
2 - The Romanesque architecture. The needs and regaining independence and the definition of the territory.
2.1-The different types-Sees cathedrals and parish churches and monastic buildings.
2.2-Features-The defensive nature
3 - The Gothic architecture. Cistercian Gothic influences and the Northern
3.1-The Southern Gothic and the importance of the Mendicant.
3-2 - The civil architecture. New buildings urban
The 3.3-medieval Portuguese.
4 - The Medievorenascentismo in Portuguese architecture - the Manueline.
The final 4.1-Gothic and Discoveries
4.2-The different types
4.3- The European-hall church and the church hall Portuguese.
4.4- The eclectic architecture and civil influence.
Evaluation Type
Continuous assessment through two written tests more frequently at the end of the semester.
