Main Aims/Objectives
The discipline comes after a route already undertaken by the European architecture, supported in the disciplines of history taught in previous years of the undergraduate curriculum. Thus, the key issues of evolution, characterization and understanding of national and international historical time itself is as essential to the understanding of Portuguese architecture.
Specific Aims/Objectives
It is intended to assess the problem of architecture produced in Portugal during the Modern and Contemporary and its relation to the corresponding international architectural production. A profile of Portuguese architecture is defined, emphasizing its own specificity and characterization, trying to define an aesthetic of Portuguese architecture.
Skills to be acquired
- Identify and characterize the main movements of Portuguese Modern / Contemporary Architecture;
- To understand Architecture as a cultural, historical and scientific phenomenon;
- To understand History as an integral part of contemporaneity and not as a distant reality, antagonistic and without applicability in the exercise of academic and professional practice of the student. This will be decisive for the consolidation of its architectural culture.
Teaching Procedures
From historical character introductions, theoretical and conceptual, where each corresponds to a thematic analysis of the finished structure, spatial and aesthetic aspects. This analysis will be done by text, image and videos always a wide perspective in order to interact with other areas of knowledge. The aim is therefore to use a methodology as comprehensive as possible, so as to give it depth necessary to present times.

2 - Analysis of the century´s architecture XV-XIX in Portugal;
3 - Main lines of Modern Architecture in Portugal;
The first consequences of Modernism in Portugal;
Influences coming from the outside, either at the level of the constructed or theoretical work;
References and academic work built in Portugal;
4 - Major lines of Contemporary Architecture in Portugal;
Influences from abroad, both in terms of both theoretical work built;
References and academic work built in Portugal.
Evaluation Type
Continuous assessment through two written tests more frequently at the end of the semester.
