Main Aims/Objectives

The opportunity and advantage of articulating Geography with Architecture define the main global aims of the curricular unity:
- Resume the recent theorical path of geography, mainly from the Classical Geography of french influence (Vidal de la Blache and Orlando Ribeiro).
- Precise some key-concepts of Geography that cross with the interest of architecture, planning and urbanism.
- Synthesize the traits of Portuguese Geography and its territorial diversity.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Accustom the student with the big conceptual ruptures of Geography and with the dynamics of transformation and arrogation of territory.
Working the opposition rural-urban, the student will discern the great human contrasts of Portugal: population, peopling, economic activities, urbanity, transports and mobility, which are the essential knowledge to the exercise of planning and ordenning the territory.

Skills to be acquired

Students are expected to work their critical ability, the necessity of understanding multiple areas of knowledge, the ability to exceed the common sense, the constant necessity that Architecture has to interprete the change in the territory and in the society and to stimulate the epistemological investigation about the conceptual use and theory.

Teaching Procedures

The theorical-practical classes follow a communicative approach, that leads to reflection, discussion and schematic synthesis elaboration, starting from the presentation of examples (texts, images, cartography),linking Geography and Architecture.
