Main Aims/Objectives
- Stand out the importance of cities in the civilizational process.
- Scrutinize some key-concepts to decode the urban space and its territorial dynamics.
- Reflect upon new urban forms.
Specific Aims/Objectives
Understand the importance of city knowledge in the upbringing in Architecture, so as to think city according to pre-existing models.
Settle prospective scenarios of urban-metropolitan development.
Skills to be acquired
Students are expected to work their critical ability, to understand multiple areas of knowledge, to exceed the common sense, and to recognize the constant necessity to think the Architecture in relation to the changes of the city in the territory.
The characterization of phenomena, elements or urban facts is also a competency to be worked.
Teaching Procedures
The classes follow a communicative approach that leads to reflection, discussion and schematic synthesis elaboration, starting from the presentation of examples (texts, images, cartography).
Programme
1 - Cities and Territory:
1.1. Some fundamental questions: relations between the diversity of social practices, the territorial logics and the rationalization of spatial planning.
2 - Understanding the cities and urban - Evolutions and critics
2.1. the decisive moments in the history of urban phenomenon;
2.2. the global scale of the urbanization process;
2.3. urban utopias of the industrial city;
2.4. the city´s role in the Fordist period;
2.5. the Fordist crisis;
2.6. the new role of the city in the post-Fordist model.
3. The urban territory: new urbanization dynamics
3.1. the centripetal models, urban expansion, deurbanization and reurbanizationt, suburbanization and gentrification;
3.2. dynamics and segregation measures
3.3. urban populations.
4. urban plans:
4.1. different types of urban plans;
4.2. main factors responsible for urban plans;
4.3. Portuguese urban plans and their influences.
Evaluation Type
The evaluation will be as settled in the "Regulamento Geral de Avaliação" of the University. It will be used the ongoing, periodical and individual evaluation.
The final evaluation includes two tests.
Teaching Resources
For the presentation/discussion of the programmatic contents it will be used: available informatics means, namely the use of PowerPoint program, multiple bibliography, cartography, photography and texts for reflection. Throughout the classes all bibliographic sources will be indicated.
