Main Aims/Objectives
The opportunity and advantage of articulating Geography with Architecture define the main global aims of the curricular unity:
- Stand out the importance of cities in the civilizational process.
- Scrutinize some key-concepts to decode the urban space and its territorial dynamics.
- Reflect upon new urban forms.
Specific Aims/Objectives
Understand the importance of city knowledge in the upbringing in Architecture, so as to think city according to pre-existing models.
Settle prospective scenarios of urban-metropolitan development, applying to the portuguese city.
Skills to be acquired
Students are expected to work their critical ability, the necessity of understanding multiple areas of knowledge, the ability to exceed the common sense, the constant necessity that Architecture has to interpret the change in the city and in the territory.
The characterization of phenomena, elements or urban facts is also a competency to be worked.
Teaching Procedures
The theorical-practical classes follow a communicative approach that leads to reflection, discussion and schematic synthesis elaboration, starting from the presentation of examples (texts, images, cartography), linking Geography and Architecture.

Chapter 1
1.0. Understanding the cities and the urban - Concepts.
1.1. Historic times in the city today and the process of transformation.
1.2. The shape and image, the social fabric and economic and planning.
1.3. The process, circumstances and change agents.
1.4. The search: how the city is experienced.
Chapter 2
2.0. Understanding the cities and the urban - Evolutions.
2.1. The center / a consolidated city.
2.2. The suburbs / city expanded.
2.3. The post-periphery / conurbada the city.
2.4. Competitiveness and economic fabric.
Chapter 3
3.0. Urbanization and modernization.
3.1. City and society: a close correlation.
3.2. Developments in Modern Society: the early stages of modernization.
3.3. The first two modern urban revolutions: the Renaissance city and the city of the Industrial Revolution.
3.4. Urban Utopias to the industrial city.
3.5. The city and the city machine equipment: the dialogue between Le Corbusier and Keynesio.
3.6. The Portuguese city of the equipment, between the intentions and achievements keynesias.

4.0. The third modern revolution.
4.1. New cities and new urbanism.
4.2. Metropolization and conurbation.

Evaluation Type
The evaluation will be as settled in the "Regulamento Geral de Avaliação" of the University. It will be used the ongoing, periodical and individual evaluation.
The final evaluation includes assiduity, punctuality, participation, research and two tests.
Teaching Resources
For the presentation/discussion of the programmatic contents it will be used: available informatics means, namely the use of PowerPoint program, multiple bibliography, cartography, photography and texts for reflection. Throughout the classes all bibliographic sources will be indicated.
