Main Aims/Objectives

To know how the sociology analyzes social problems of the contemporary urban spaces .
To use concepts of sociology to understand urban dinamics;
To understand the relationships between socio-political phenomena and physical features of urban spaces;
To understand the relationships between the transformations of cities due to social, political, technological, economic and cultural conditions that characterize contemporary societies;

Specific Aims/Objectives

To identify and understand urban problems arising from social, political, economic and cultural changes.
To understand the relationships between urban dynamics and political sistems;
To know experiences of citizen participation in urban planning;
To find innovative political solutions for urban planning.

Skills to be acquired

Cognitive skills: objectivity and analytical reflective and critical attitude of the various topics proposed in the program;
Productive skills: to identify, analyze and present urban solutions that enable to mitigate social problems related to urban space; to recognize the need for interdisciplinary work in designing, managing and developing projects of urban intervention.

Teaching Procedures

The lessons are theoretics and elapse under the form of expositive contents by the responsibility of the professor. However it will not be left the possibility of the participation of the studants in decurrent debates about ther displayed substances.

Programme

1. Urban Sociology: object and perspectives:
1.1. definition of urban sociology;
1.2. the city as a global social system.

2. The research fields of urban sociology:
2.1. current multiple of urban sociology;
2.2. foci of interest and empirical research.

3. Old and new social imbalances:
3.1. the exhaustion of the Fordist model;
3.2. urban social structure;
3.3. the new urban poverty:
3.4. urban dualism;
3.5. different logic design of social housing (social housing policy of the Estado Novo and the SAAL).

4. The Global City
4.1. economic restructuration and informational model of development: the space of flows;
4.2. productive and spatial logic of the global city.

5. The Dual City:
5.1. the struggle for territory and the city fortification: gated communities and public space;
5.2. conflicts in the dual city.

6. Entertainment City:
6.1. disneylandização the city;
6.2. intercity competition.

7. The lived City
7.1. the city of the senses;
7.2. the city of the ´different´.

Evaluation Type

Two written tests are carried out according to the regulations of the continuous evaluation of the University and an assignment.
