Understanding the historical and sociological processes of urbanization phenomena.
Understanding the relationship between the phenomena of industrialization with urbanization processes.
Understanding the city as a space for economic production, social and collective consumption.
Understanding the city as a space of cultural consumption and representation of power collective struggles.
Specific Aims/Objectives
Understanding the value of the sociological significance of the city, in the architect and urban space planning activities.
Skills to be acquired
Being able to integrate the sociological perspective of cities in the urban space planning work.
Being able to plan the urban space in terms of quality of life and well-being of the populations.
Being able to plan the urban space in terms of technical innovation and as a space of aesthetic utopia.

Study and discussion of case studies of domestic and foreign cities.

1. Scope of the discipline of Urban Sociology.
1.1. Urban Sociology as an interdisciplinary area.
2. The city, in the historical and sociological perspective
2.1. Origin of cities;
2.2. The Antiquity cities;
2.3. The Medieval and Renaissance cities;
2.4. The industrial city;
2.5. Urban Sociology in the postwar period;
2.6. Globalization and Urban Spaces;
2.7. The informational city - place of flows.
3. The city - a place of fragmentation and social imbalance
3.1. The city as a system of production and consumption;
3.2. Urban planning in the Fordist and Post-Fordist periods;
3.3. Fragmentation of urban space;
3.4. Social housing - the SAAL process.

4.1. The divided and fragmented city ;
4.2. The City of Fear, by Mike Davis;
4.3. The walled city, by Edward Soja, and the gated communities;

Evaluation Type
Besides the frequency examination and the test examination, the assessment will include two tests and, eventually, an investigation work made by the students.
