Main Aims/Objectives
Knowledge of Portuguese and European Economic History , XX and XXI centuries , supported by the scientific foundations of Growth Theory and Economic Development and macroeconomic models , determinants of political decision-making . It is intended to develop analytical and decision making capabilities , positioned in the macroeconomic reality of the global economy.
Specific Aims/Objectives
1 - Acquisition of the Growth Theory and Economic Development fundamentals and macroeconomic models supporting public choices decisions;
2 - Development of analytical capacity , scientifically sustained , of the Portuguese and European growth strategies since the Great Depression to the twenty-first century .
3 - Develop students autonomy through oriented research. .
Skills to be acquired
1 - Develop scientific analysis skills;
2 - Knowledge of Portuguese Contemporary Economic History , including macro - economic strategies in different periods: 1926-1950 ; 1950-1974 ; 1974-1984 ; 1986-1999 , 2000 - 2016 , subject to critical analysis , scientifically supported .
3 - Develop the autonomy of students work through oriented research .

Lectures classes ;
Inter- Active Classes - thematic discussion of the Portuguese and European contemporary economic history European in different considered periods subordinate to the domain of scientific analysis tools;
Active research on international databases in order to analyze the political -economic and social profile of different economies.

1 - The long-term- approach to the dynamics of growth and development - scientific tools.
2 - Measuring Economic Growth and Development - analysis of the Portuguese economy within the European Union.
3 - Economic Growth - Self-Sustained Growth - Institutions and Development - Theoretical and Conceptual Analysis.
4 - The Institutionalist approach to the Portuguese economy at present and its position in the European Union.
5 - Short-term macroeconomic model - Keynesian approach of the Portuguese economy.
6 - Aggregate-Supply Macroeconomic Model - Portuguese and Europe economies.
7 - Contemporary Portuguese Economy:
The phases of the Portuguese Economic growth in the period 1910- present:
From the 1st Republic to stabilization (1910-30);
Stabilizing the creation of pre-conditions for growth by the Estado Novo (1926-1950);
The Golden Period of Growth of the Portuguese Economy (1950-1974);
From the Revolution to the introduction of democracy and macroeconomic imbalances (1974-1984);
Entry into the European Union in 1986;
The Portuguese Economy in the 90´s, the technological revolution and globalization;
8 - The Portuguese Economy in the XXI century:
The Global Financial Crisis and the Austerity Ideology iin Europe;
The European Union and the crisis of the welfare state;
The European Union and the sovereign debt crisis;
Portugal and Troika´s memorandum in 2011 - the structural reforms;
The Euro zone and internal macroeconomic imbalances - pauperization, exclusion and economic and social conflicts.
The potential disintegration of the European Union - the Brexit case.
Portugal and its relations with the PALOPs.
9 - The Global Economy
Regional Economic Integration - The European Union, Free Trade Areas and Economic Unions in the World;
Innovation Mercantilism: USA, China and India.
Evaluation Type
Two tests will be conducted throughout the semester with a rating of 50 % / 50 % .
Production, public presentation and discussion of research essays developed during the semester .
