Main Aims/Objectives
The aim of economic regulation is to understand how markets work after the implementation of legal instruments by the regulator. Thus, this course describes the various legal instruments of the regulatory policy and assesses its impact on the socio-economic objectives of the regulator, namely, the quantities produced, the prices charged, the quality of products and the conditions of competition.
Specific Aims/Objectives
The specific aims of this curricular unit are: (i) Study the instruments of economic regulation applied in the regulation of the different market structures, in particular, in the Monopoly and in the Oligopoly; (iI) Study national and international competition laws and their application in the different sectors of activity; (iii) Study how the different economic theories justify the intervention of the state in the regulatory process of economic and social activity.
Skills to be acquired
The competences to be acquired are: (i) Ability to apply the legal instruments for regulation of economic activity, in particular, in Oligopolies and Monopolies; (ii) Ability to criticize technical opinions produced by regulators; (iii) Ability to analyze economic regulation in key sectors ina an economy, such as: transport, energy, health and financial markets.
