Main Aims/Objectives

This course is intended to introduce undergraduates to the fundamentals of International Relations and the major international issues of the twenty-first century, in order to provide students with a conceptual basis which allows them to understand global interactions and the current world.

Specific Aims/Objectives

It is intended that students are able to identify, understand, define and relate the main concepts of International Relations, as well as reflect on the key issues shaping global politics in the twenty-first century, in order to learn their importance for the evolution of the international system. The course also seeks to promote the capacity of reflection on the global order´s future.

Skills to be acquired

At the end of the course, students should be able to: define the object of International Relations; recognize and differentiate the various actors of international relations; define the concept of foreign policy; analyze the process of globalization and its implications; relate the concepts of power, security, conflict and cooperation; analyze the most important issues of the twenty-first century; demonstrate the capability to collect information and interpret documents.

Teaching Procedures

Classes will be as interactive as possible. Reflection and debate in the classroom, written works and the analysis of documents, using audiovisual media whenever possible, will be encouraged. In class tutorial the teacher will guide each student, in order to clarify doubts and supervise the development of the academic work.
