Main Aims/Objectives

Promoting the knowledge and critical reflection regarding the epistemology, history and theories of psychology.
Promoting an understanding of the psychology evolution, from classical antiquity to the present, as an independent scientific and technological power.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Promoting the learning of the philosophical, biological, and medical history of psychology, taking into account its historical evolution.
Promoting the knowledge regarding the mainstream theories, its principles and epistemological foundations. Promoting the knowledge about contemporary psychology.

Skills to be acquired

To acknowledge and discuss the major events of psychology evolution to the present;
To acknowledge and discuss the major epistemological theories.
To acknowledge the main theoretical currents and authors of contemporary psychology.

Teaching Procedures

The theoretical lectures will have a expositive nature using also audiovisual media. Oral participation of students will be promoted. The tutorial lectures will be a supplement regarding the first ones. Discussion and reflection will be promoted. Questions clarification relating to material taught in class, work assessment and written test, will be given.

Kuhn and paradigm discontinuity;
Lakatos and methodological falsifiability.

II. Antiquity and Middle Ages:
Pre-civilization and humanity;
Major Greek philosophers;
After Aristotle.

III. Modern Age:
Renaissance eclecticism;
Descartes and Cartesian dualism;
Empiricism and positivism;
Rationalism and Existentialism;
Physiology and experimental psychology.

IV. Contemporary Age:
Main theories of psychology - contributions and limitations:
Structuralism;
Functionalism;
Psychoanalysis;
Humanism;
Behaviorism;
Gestalt;
Cognitivism;
Constructivism.

Evaluation Type

Continuous assessment will take into account attendance to the lectures, the quality of class participation the completion of a brief paper work and a written test.
