Main Aims/Objectives
To understand the specificity of social sciences by comparison with the other sciences;
To know concepts and theories that familirize the students with the interpretation of the social reality;
To recognize the importance of social factors in the development of human beings.
Specific Aims/Objectives
To understand and to identify the specific perspectives of different social sciences;
To understand and to question the processes of rupture between scientific knowledge and common sense;
To understand the epistemological importance of interdisciplinarity in social analysis;
To know and to use concepts of the social sciences in the interpretation of social phenomenon;
To know the general procedures of an investigation.
Skills to be acquired
To acquire an analytical and reflective stance on social reality;
To be able to use concepts and theories in the analises of the social reality.
To break with prejudices and preconceptions about the understanding of the social reality and human behavior.
Teaching Procedures
Lectures by faculty;
Debate classes on the basis of issues, texts, films and others sources supplied by the teacher;
Monitoring and supporting the development of assignments.

1. Social Sciences - a particular form of knowledge of the social:
1.1. Scientific knowledge and common sense: the process of rupture;
1.2. Social facts and the identification of the social reality;
1.3. Scientific content of Social Sciences;
1.4. Critics of naturalism and historicism;
1.4 The issue of objectivity and subjectivity in the social sciences;
1.5. Theories and paradigms in the social sciences;
1.6. Objectivity in Social Sciences.
2. Basic factores of social explications:
2.1. Heredity; physical environment; culture; social relationships.
3. Observation and analysis of social facts:
3.1. The problem of observation;
3.2. Document Analysis;
3.3.direct observation: extensive and intensive
3.4. Frames of interpretation;
3.5. The problem of experimentation.
4. The individual and the collective:
4.1. The group life in the formation of individuals;
4.2. Effects of groups;
4.3. individual factores and social processes.
4. Some fundamental concepts in social sciences.
Evaluation Type
Continuous assessment follows the parameters of existing legislation and may be modified according to changes in that legislation and the guidelines of the University.
- Two tests of continuous assessment;
- Individual and or group assignments;
- Attendance, oral participation and interest in the discipline.
