Main Aims/Objectives
To understand Neuropsychology as the discipline that studies the relationship between behaviour and brain functioning, in its normal and abnormal variants.
To understand the contribution of Neuropsychology for the comprehension of human development and its role in differential diagnosis between organic semiology and psychopathology.
Specific Aims/Objectives
To learn several concepts which defines this field of Psychology.
To acknowledge the historical background of this discipline and the contribution of other areas of knowledge that are relevant for Neuropsychology.
To identify instruments for the assessment of cognitive functions and respective deficits.
To understand the diverse perspectives of human behavior through the lens of Neuropsychology (complex neuronal activity, behavior, emotions and personality) and respective functional-neuroanatomical substrates.
Skills to be acquired
Students should be able to analyze correctly (in a focused and inter-connected fashion) the neurobehavioral processes; and to know the assessment protocol of brain functioning and its relation with cognitive processes, in a normal and pathological perspective.

Demonstrations of effects or phenomena mentioned in classes, using illustrative videos.
Programme
1 – Introduction to Neuropsychology. Definition, methods and relation with other scientific areas. The historical foundations of neuropsychology.
2 – Hemispheric specialization. Principles of brain asymmetry. Variations in brain asymmetry. Disconnection syndromes.
3 – Neuropsychology of motor functions and associated disorders: Apraxias.
4 – Neuropsychology of perceptive functions and associated disorders: Agnosias.
5 – Neuropsychology of memory and associated disorders.
6 – Neuropsychology of language and associated disorders: Aphasia, Alexia, and Agraphia.
7 – Neuropsychology of executive functioning and associated disorders.
Evaluation Type
Two written tests;
Final exam.
