Main Aims/Objectives

The aim of this course is to obtain knowledge (and practice) on how to conduct an observation and an interview within psychological research and practice.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Students should:
(i) Recognize observation and interview as specific techniques for psychological research and practice;
(ii) understand psychologist’s role as an observer and as an interviewer;
(iii) identify main steps and processes during an observation and an interviewing course;
(iv) be aware of the differences, the utility and the limitations of main interview techniques.

Skills to be acquired

By the end of the course, students should demonstrate their ability to conduct a psychological interview and an observation, distinguish main steps, processes and techniques, and their adequacy to specific contexts of psychological research and practice.

Teaching Procedures

Classes will include lecture and discussion, but students’ participation will be strongly encouraged. Mandatory and complementary readings for each class will be indicated as teaching and learning method will stress students’ active role. Practical exercises will be provided during classes. A team work data colection and analysis’ project will be conducted extra-classes by students in order to materialize skills developed.

Programme

I. Interview as a method for psychological research and practice
1. The interview as a qualitative technique, its aims and particularities
2. Basic issues of interviewing: relationship with the interviewee, steps, structuring degrees and types of questions.
3. Interviewing skills: Empathy, acceptance, active listening and interviewer attitudes and behaviours.
4. Practical issues: setting.
5. Interviewing techniques.
6. Life history and anamnesis: components, sequence, structure and context; psychological and emotional aspects of life story telling.

II. Focus Group as a method for psychological research: characteristics and particularities

III. Observation as a method for psychological research
1. Introduction
2. Observer’s characteristics, role, ethics, impact on the observer, skills.

Evaluation Type

Both written assignment and teamwork´s project are included in evaluation. Individual participation is also considered, in what roleplays and focus group classroom activities are concerned.
