Main Aims/Objectives

• To understand Psychology of Language in an integrated approach, addressing the study of language, its foundations (biological and developmental basis) and the functioning of several language skills.
• To acknowledge the contribution of several scientific domains such as cognitive psychology, linguistics, sciences of communication and neurosciences to the evolution of this field of study.

Specific Aims/Objectives

To know the structure and cognitive processes underlying language.
To identify brain structures involved in language and its main disorders.
To understand language acquisition and development.
To acknowledge contextual influences in language.
To understand the functioning of the main language skills.
To apprehend the processes of language comprehension and production.
To be acquainted with research methods used in studying these processes.

Skills to be acquired

Skills of study and accommodation of knowledge in the field of Psychology of Language.
Capacity to apply this knowledge to the areas in interface with Psychology of Language.
Capacity to critically appraise texts and articles in this field of study.

Teaching Procedures

Audiovisual resources to expose and discuss themes.
Share of support texts through e-learning platform.
Demonstrations of effects or phenomena mentioned in classes, using illustrative videos.

Programme

Theme 1 - The study of language: concept; the origin of language; functions of language. Elements of communication process and communication channels. Language structure and cognitive processes involved in language.
Theme 2 - The biological foundations of language: acquisition and development of human language; theories of language acquisition. Brain structures subserving language; bilingualism and second language acquisition.
Theme 3 - Mental lexicon and comprehension: word recognition; reading. Research methods to investigate reading. Speech and sentence comprehension.
Theme 4 - Semantics, the study of meaning. Sentence structure comprehension and word meanings.
Theme 5 - Language production: voice and speech production. Writing and dysgraphias.
Theme 6 - Language disorders.

Evaluation Type

Two written tests;
Final exam.
