Main Aims/Objectives
The discipline of Psychology of Groups aims to introduce and familiarize students with updated knowledge of the principles, research findings and theories related to group processes, stimulate critical thinking, evaluation and application of interpersonal skills and to develop the ability to present and express ideas in a social context.
Specific Aims/Objectives
- Characterize and categorize the different types of group;
- Describe the main contributors to the development of knowledge to the group level;
- Define the various factors concerning the composition of groups and their influence on the group phenomena;
- Characterizing the structural member to a group;
- Characterize the group conflicts and social dilemmas;
- Describe the influences on group performance;
- Characterize the ecology of small groups.
Skills to be acquired
Mobilize various types of groups coming from the Psychology knowledge to the diagnosis and intervention on the dynamics in group.
Teaching Procedures
The classes will focus on the combination of knowledge and know-how, by alternating the exhibition and interrogative method, active teaching methods, through the use of group work, simulations where students take great role.
Programme
Unit 1 - Introduction to the group concept. 1. group concept. Criteria for group definition. 2. Theoretical and practical interest of the study of groups. 3. Past, present and future. Recent trends. 4. Definitions and epistemological problems.
Unit 2 - Composition of groups: 1. Dimension, demographics, psychological characteristics. 2. Central Trend versus variability (heterogeneity, configurations). 3. Composition as a result of social or psychological processes. 4. Composition as modeler context of other psychological phenomena. 5. Composition as a cause influencing the structure, dynamics and performance of the group.
Unit 3 - Structure of the groups: 1. Statutes. 2. Roles. 3. Standards. 4.Coesion. 5.Culture.
Unit 4 - Conflict in groups: 1. Social Dilemmas 2. Trading. 3. Formation of alliances and coalitions. 4. Conflict. 5. Differences of power.
Unit 5 - Performance of the groups: 1. Decision making. 2. Productivity.
Unit 6 - Ecology of small groups: 1. Physical Surround. 2. Social Surround. 3. Surround time.
Evaluation Type
1. Two written tests.
2. Group work with oral presentation.
Teaching Resources
Classes will be supported by several features including, computer / projector, TV and video and the frame.
