Main Aims/Objectives
The subject Ergonomics has as primary objective to increase the awareness of students to the interactions generated between man, the surrounding space and the equipments. It is intended that the students learn to adapt space and work equipment to the physical and psychological characteristics of the human being.
Specific Aims/Objectives
To inform the students about the importance of ergonomics and anthropometry in the adaptation of equipment and spaces with daily activities of people with different ages and mobilization abilities.
To lead the future designers to actively contribute in building a sustainable and more inclusive society.
Skills to be acquired
Acquisition of knowledge, research techniques and intervention strategies that will enable the students to harmonize the relationship between Man, the equipment and the environment that surrounds him, particularly regarding aspects such as: a) dimensional and anthropometric; b) functional and ergonomic; and c) perceptional and psychological.
Teaching Procedures
Some lessons will be imminently theoretical, intended for the presentation of the contents and theoretical framework of practical exercises.
Another classes will be imminently practical, aimed at individual monitoring of each student, using for that practical exercises.
Programme
Ergonomics and work. History of Ergonomics. The four main stages - the Anthropometric ergonomics, informational ergonomics, systems’ ergonomics and heuristic or forecasting ergonomics. Ergonomics applied to Architecture and Design.
Intervention areas and methodologies of the ergonomic design. American and European movements. Task and activity analysis - inseparable parameters of the job analysis.
Anthropometry. Morphological factors. Structure of the human body. Body development. Somatic constitution. Individual differences - percentiles. Applied Anthropometry. Design criteria based on Anthropometry. Criteria using Anthropometric tables. Volumes and values of the human body. The hidden dimensions. Anthropometry applied to the Architecture and Design.
Physiological factors. Occupational Biomechanics. Static and dynamic labor. Body postures and movements. Applications forces. The human body as a system of mechanical levers. Lifting and carrying loads. Handling and control.
Practical application of the aforementioned concepts. Reflection on the characteristics associated with insecurity and inhibiting the usage of artifacts and spaces. Reflection on the characteristics associated with safety and confidence in the usage of artifacts and spaces. Interrelationship between ergonomics, emotional needs, technical assistance and architectural barriers.
Evaluation Type
The evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the Regulamento Geral de Avaliação de Conhecimentos e Competências da Universidade Lusíada and the Specific Rules of the Faculdade de Arquitetura e Artes. The continuous assessment component of the course will result in the completion of two written tests which should reflect the learning content.
Teaching Resources
General and specific bibliography. Audio visual presentations. Presentation of theoretical research and projects related to the syllabus.
