Main Aims/Objectives

To provide the students with an overview of the available materials and suitable for the production of design objects. Listing the most appropriate manufacturing technologies, depending on the characteristics of the materials and on the required objectives.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Raising awareness on the correct selection of materials according to their properties and respective manufacturing technologies. Understanding the mechanical behavior of materials.

Skills to be acquired

Comprehension of the main advantages and limitations of the different families of materials. Comprehension of the concepts of stiffness, strength and ductility, related to the mechanical properties of the materials. To distinguish the different types of stress which affect the materials. To study the advantages and limitations of various ferrous and nonferrous alloys and their manufacturing methods.

Teaching Procedures

The classes will be mostly theoretical, except for a proposed practical research paper.

Programme

1. Brief presentation of the different types of materials and their evolution throughout history. Properties of the materials - mechanical, thermal, electrical, magnetic, optical and chemical. Processing and classification of the materials.
2. Metals. Pure metals and metal alloys. Properties of the pure metals and of the main metal alloys. Steels. Stainless steels. Nonferrous alloys. Aluminum alloys. Copper alloys. Magnesium alloys. Manufacture.
3. Ceramic. Traditional ceramic and technical ceramic. Ceramic composites. Manufacturing processes. Main properties of ceramic materials.
4. Glasses. The composition of glasses. Manufacture. Tempered glass.
5. Polymers. Structure. Types of polymers - thermoplastic and thermosetting. Elastomers. Natural polymers. Polymers with shape memory. Transformation processes of polymers.
6. Composites. Reinforcements and matrices. Composites manufacturing. Wood (natural composite).

Evaluation Type

The evaluation is done by the confirmation of attendance and continuous assessment of the students. For the continuous assessment is taken into account the attendance, practical work and tests, according to the regulation of the University.

Teaching Resources

General and specific bibliography. Audio-visual presentations. Possible field trips to manufacturing units in order to observe in loco the production techniques.
