Main Aims/Objectives

In this course we intend will give an overview of the properties of materials and how to obtain them, as well as complementary techniques to successfully port the design and manufacture of a product.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Study the physical, mechanical and technological materials properties.
Study precision measurement techniques.
Study the dimensional tolerances and adjustments.
Study binding processes.
Study the surface states.

Skills to be acquired

- Identification and comparison of material properties.
- Use of electronic materials databases.
- Realization of dimensional control .
- Identification of binding processes.
- Selection of coatings and surface finishes.

Teaching Procedures

Materials’ selection exercises will be based on case studies. Particular attention will be focused towards the use of materials databases. Videos of manufacturing processes will be shown.

Programme

1 - Physical, mechanical and technological material properties.
2 - Characterization of properties: standards and testing.
3 - Testing of tensile and hardness.
4 - Tolerancing and adjustments.
5 - Dimensional control. Use of some equipment.
6 - Study of bonding processes.
7 - Study of surface states and roughness.

Evaluation Type

The evaluation is done through a final exam. During the semester will be conducted two tests for continuous assessment.
