Main Aims/Objectives
To understand design as an autonomous discipline, located within a theoretical line of thought that follows the development of society, shaped by its action and forms of expression.
Specific Aims/Objectives
- To understand the need for the origin of design and its interdisciplinary nature as a way of ordering a society where transformations do not take place at the same pace.
- To understand the concept as an agglutinating element of economic, environmental and technological factors in a project.
- To recognize the role of the designer as a promoter of quality of life and well-being for all.
- To enrich the technical and critical vocabulary of design.
Skills to be acquired
- To understand the dual dimension of the object: project of a single piece / project for mass production, guaranteeing the correct use of technology in its production;
- To reflect on design as a permanent restlessness that should accompany the needs of society, materializing identity with its spatial-temporal moment;
- To develop a commitment to formulate and search for solutions for social well-being, as future design professionals.
Teaching Procedures
The teaching methodology will consist: 1) expositive and interrogative methods; and, 2) active method promoting debate and study cases.

2. Design as an autonomous discipline and its antecedents in history.
3. Design and Context.
4. Design and Methodology.
5. The practice of design and its interdisciplinary nature.
6. Design and other domains: Design/Art and Design/Crafts.
Evaluation Type
Assessment in Theory of Design is conducted according the General Assessment Regulations of the Lusíada University in force.
Additionally, the following apply as criteria for continuous assessment:
a) Class attendance, informative class participation;
b) Two individual and/or group exercises proposed in class and debate;
c) Two written exercises to assess knowledge acquired;
c) Final semester exam.

Lectures (audio-visual resources);
Study trips (if they are appropriate to the topics addressed);
Text analysis;
Image research;
Individual and/or group assignments on the topics lectured.
