Main Aims/Objectives

Expand and consolidate the theoretical and practical insight of students about the their future designer activity.
Addressing the project methodology as a process of rationalization of the creative act soving problems in order to improve human life.
Promoting a critical awareness and encourage the observation skill.
Promote research and experimentation.
To Become aware of the aesthetic, ethical, social, economic and environmental implications of designer´s profession.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Promote interdisciplinary, professionalism and accuracy at the various stages of the project.
Resort to research in order to support consolidation of knowledge and sustaining creativity.
Develop the capacity of understanding and mastery of synthesis, by understanding the relationships between the briefing, the context and environment.
Understanding the importance of studying the life cycle of products and their environmental impact to the planet.

Skills to be acquired

Develop the capacity of critical analysis of ergonomic, psychological and sociological aspects of the final result of the project: identity, inclusiveness and sustainability.
Develop capabilities to propose innovative solutions supported in the knowledge and management process that involves the materialization of creation: research, project methodology, design, prototyping, production, promoting the quality, the efficiency and the innovation.

Teaching Procedures

Analysis and diagnosis of case studies.
Group discussion of issues relevant to the course, which contextualise real problems.
Collecting technical and scientific information, using various sources: books, magazines, scientific articles, databases, Internet, technical visits and / or interviews, analytical tables, reports.
Study visits as regards the work in progress.
Workshops. Participation in competitions.

Programme

Conceptualization, planning and development of individual projects that provide students the opportunity to test and consolidate their own individual inclinations and also encourage teamwork.
To develop the capacity for interdisciplinary work that motivates the use of diverse knowledge in the development and execution of research and in the creation of projects.
Analysis and study of issues relevant to the course, which contextualises real problems that can be motivators of student critical action.
To promote the capacity for critical analysis and problem/real needs diagnosis.
To study the behavior and reactions of people: analytical studies to usability. See beyond the appearance, to identify the potential, the essence, the need.
Promoting a proper projectual methodology as a tool for solving real problems.
Knowledge and mastery of the different stages of development of the concept of a product / service: context of a need, goal setting, competition research, case studies, evaluation of alternative production and communication of the final product.
Emphasize in the educational activity, the scientific nature and the linking to economic and social life.
To recognize and to exercise in the vast alphabet of graphic communication available, the correct means of expression.
Linking knowledge in design and technology to solve needs.
To study the environmental, visual and social impact of what we project, prompting the student to seek workable, efficient, simple, flexible, accessible, meaningful, symbolic and technical solutions, that consider the full conditions of usability and comfort of its users.
To foster new processes and optimize production of products / services to improve the life of human beings.
Participation in competitions that allow students to approach the labor market and to future professional challenges.
Development of projects with progressive complexity for application of acquired knowledge.
Promoting the creation of projects less concerned with photogenic and visual prominence and more identified with the efficiency, atemporality and affection.
A design that is motivated to remedy needs and anticipate problems.
Internalize the social responsibility of the designer as a generator of new habits and / or values.
To become aware that the design of the twenty-first century should primarily privileged and restore harmony between the natural and built: the consolidation of the notions of sustainability, ecology, recycling.

Organization and rigor in research, written communication, project methodology and in the achievement of proposed works.
Presentation skills, oral and communication supporting of projects, discussion and criticism.
Compliance with established deadlines and delivery of the complete 4 individual theoretical and practical works.
