Main Aims/Objectives

Mastering the fundamentals of Global Design;
Consolidation of critical, analytical and systemic thinking;
Anticipation of the future, by the transformation and construction of knowledge;
Building of professional context awareness.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Identification, analysis and articulation of national and international similarities;
Adequacy of functional, aesthetic, dimensional, cultural, sustainable values;
Develop products at the enterprise level applying the knowledge acquired;
Develop and rigorously present three-dimensional human scale projects;
To master rigorously technical drawings, quotations, 3D models and renders;
Adapt and independently implement design processes and products in real context.

Skills to be acquired

Understanding and applying design as an integrated and transdisciplinary strategy;
Ability to apply analytical, critical and systemic thinking and to use research as the strategic tool for innovation;
Ability to interpret and recreate briefings and to direct and coordinate Design processes;
Know how to present, substantiate, sustain and communicate ideas;
Ability to formulate emerging problems with initiative and entrepreneurial spirit.

Teaching Procedures

1. Classes Theoretical / Practical:
- Exposure and demonstration of content through various resources;
- Comparative and reflexive analyzes based on reference projects (case studies);
- Experimentation and practical application of contents using different proposals;
2. Tutorial Guidance:
- Follow-up and orientation of students´ work.

Programme

In the 3rd year of design degree the theme proposed for this year as an aggregator of the different courses is the participatory and collaborative design. In this context, the syllabus content will be articulated with the evaluation proposals that include projects, quick exercises, and differentiated activities that include not only the academic environment but also the contact and attention to the surrounding society.

1. Design of furniture using an international competition
- Ergonomics and anthropometry;
- Functional, aesthetic and production characteristics;
- Cultural and social dimension of an object;
- Durability and operation;
- Technical drawings, quotations and 3D modeling;
- Planning, techniques and production costs.
- Maquetization.

2. Experimental design using modularity
- Concepts of experimental design and module;
- The module / block as a product base that is customizable, flexible and reusable;
- Module case studies on product design and architecture;
- The cost and efficiency of modular products.

3. Design of interior spaces, in partnership with a startup in the area
- Development of briefings;
- Geographical and socio-cultural background;
- Differentiation of private space and social space;
- The adaptation and reuse of existing spaces;
- Resolution of spatial problems;
- Functionality and optimization of existing resources;
- Physical, psychological factors;
- Colors, textiles, lighting and materials for an interior environment;
- functional, aesthetic and production characteristics;
- Technical drawings, quotations and 3D modeling;
- Maquetization;

4. Design of social / inclusive design and entrepreneurship.
- Principles of inclusive / social design and Human Center Design;
- Economic and social design;
- Importance of entrepreneurial practices;
- Analysis of entrepreneurial case studies.

All the aforementioned themes will be developed in parallel with the following resources: critical analysis of examples; project methodologies; descriptive design memories; and means of embodiment / layout.
Finally, it is expected that each of these proposals will have a duration of approximately seven weeks and that, during its development, the exercises and complementary activities will be introduced according to the needs of the students and increase their own autonomy.

Evaluation Type

The assessment methodology will be carried out according to the General Evaluation Regulation of the Universidade Lusíada. Continuous evaluation criteria, besides attendance, participation and commitment in the classes as well as the accomplishment of fast exercises, the evaluation will focus mainly on the process, execution, presentation and sustentation of the four great proposals of work previously referenced and, finally, on the frequency exams.

Teaching Resources

Theoretical / practical classes; moodle; bibliography and webgraphy; computer; multimedia projector; frame; scratch materials; open classes and study visits.
