Main Aims/Objectives
To reflect about the contemporary design practice within a social, cultural and economic context.
Specific Aims/Objectives
- To contextualize culturally, politically and economically the appearance and development of design projects and products within the contemporary portuguese society.
- To reflect about the relationship between the social, cultural and historical specificities of the portuguese population and the creations of the national design.
Skills to be acquired
By the end of the semester, the students will have learned:
- To understand the way how design products contribute to the qualification of a specific social and cultural environment;
- To understand the way the new technologies and materials challenge the traditional meaning of an object.
- To identify, analyse and understand the specificities of the Portuguese design, relating them with Portugal cultural history.
Teaching Procedures
The teaching methodology will consist, in a first stage, in the use of the expositive and of the interrogative methods; in a second stage, will be applied the active method.

- The design practice in Portugal: socio-historical and cultural perspective.
- The institutionalization of design in Portugal.
- The role of design in portuguese society.
- Design and identity. The Portuguese design and national identity.
- The design and industry: Author´s design versus industrial design.
- Globalization: Global design vs. local design.
- Eco-design and sustainable design in Portugal.
Evaluation Type
Assessment in Theory of Design is conducted according the General Assessment Regulations of the Lusíada University in force. Additionally, the following apply as criteria for continuous assessment: a) Class attendance, informative class participation;
b) Two individual and/or group exercises proposed in class and debate; c) Two written exercises to assess knowledge acquired; c) Final semester exam.

- Lectures (audio-visual resources);
- Study trips (if they are appropriate to the topics addressed);
- Text analysis;
- Image research;
- Individual and/or group assignments on the topics lectured.
