Main Aims/Objectives
The main objective of the UC is to introduce students to:
- the main lines of development of theoretical and empirical knowledge on juvenile delinquency and antisocial behavior
- the social control of juvenile delinquency, in particular the contemporary developments of juvenile justice systems
Specific Aims/Objectives
This curricular unit intends to provide students with knowledge and analitical skills on:
- the conditions for the scientific study of the phenomenon, namely the key-concepts and methods
- the main theoretical and empirical lines of current research on antisocial and delinquent behavior
- on the evolution of juvenile justice in Portugal , its principles, goals and their relationship with thepublic policies of social care and criminal and security policies;
- the Portuguese experience in an international comparative framework
Skills to be acquired
By the end of the Curricular Unit, students should have acquired the basic knowledge and the skills for an integrated approach of the following topics:
• the main conceptual and methodological axes that organize the scientific knowledge on juvenile delinquency
• the evolution of the Portuguese juvenile justice system and its current developments current developments, in a comparative framework.
Teaching Procedures
Classes that combine theoretical moments, aimed at exposing and discussing the main contents of the program with practical moments in which relevant research tools and studies in the domain are analyzed. Thus, theoretical knowledge is combined with the analysis and discussion of scientific literature and other relevant documents.

I. The conditions for the scientific study of antisocial and delinquent behaviors of children and youth
1. Key-concepts and main theoretical and methodological tools for the description of the phenomenon
-Current trends in Portugal and Europe
-Age and crime
2. Theoretical and empirical lines of explanation/ understanding: factors, processes and trajectories
-Theorectical perspectives on juvenile delinquency: the social control theory (Hirschi, 1969); self-control – a “general theory of crime” (Gottfredson & Hirschi 1990); the social learning theories.
-An introduction to developmental criminology: conditions of emergence and key-concepts; the longitudinal syudies; the Developmental Taxonomy of Antisocial Behavior (Moffitt, 1993)
II.The Juvenile justice system (JJS) : the Portuguese experience in the international context
1.Introduction
- The emergence of JJ systems in Europe and North America
-Elements for the analysis of current trends in European JJ systems
-The rights of children in conflict with the law and the international JJ standards
2.The Portuguese experience
-The evolution of JJ in Portugal: rationalities, institutions and practices
- The tutelary educative system in a comparative framework
