Main Aims/Objectives

Understand the structure, methodology and main theoretical frameworks of criminological thinking.

Specific Aims/Objectives

- Understand the development of Criminology from the nineteenth century to the present;
- Understand the main criminological theories and their articulation with the criminological research;
- Analyze the process and main objects of research in criminology;
- Understand the relationship between Criminology and the criminal justice system;
- Understand the main intervention areas in Criminology.

Skills to be acquired

- To know the essential concepts and fundamental theories of Criminology from the twentieth century to the present and its application to the explanation of the criminal phenomenon;
- Identify the main characteristics of the methodological process in Criminology.

Teaching Procedures

Expositive and demonstrative method and elaboration of practical exercises.

I- Definition, object and delimitation of the criminological field:
1. Conceptual delimitation of Criminology
2. Object and main areas of criminological knowledge
3. Epistemological Statute of Criminology
4. Fundamental Criminology and Applied Criminology

II- Method:
1. Quantitative and qualitative methodology in criminology
2. Instruments and sources of data collection used in criminology research

III- Theoretical systems of current criminology:
  1. The etiological Criminology
  2. The Dynamic Criminology
  3. The Criminology of the act
4. Theories of social reaction

IV- Criminologies of the present time:
  1. Insecurity and fear of crime
2. Victimology

Evaluation Type

Class attendance; evaluation and final evaluation, in accordance with the RGACC.
