Main Aims/Objectives

This UC aims to introduce students to psychopathology and its relationship with crime.

Specific Aims/Objectives

This UC aims at providing students with i) knowledge on the evolution of problems, concepts and theoretical frameworks of the “psychopathology-crime complex”; ii) the main criminological research advances in this domain.

Skills to be acquired

At the end of the UC, students are expected to have developed:
- Competences to differentiate psychiatry, psychopathology and criminal psychopathology.
- Competences to Identify the concrete problems that arise in the convergence of these disciplines, within the framework of criminal justice and security.

Teaching Procedures

THEORETICAL CLASSES: Predominantly expository sessions designed to introduce students to the program contents.
PRACTICAL CLASSES: Sessions designed to foster critical thinking, guided by case discussion.
TUTORIAL LESSONS: Sessions for the analysis and discussion of literature in the field,
according to the UC objectives.

Programme

I- General introduction to the UC.
II- Definition of criminal psychopathology in relation to general psychopathology, to special psychopathology, to psychiatry, and Clinical Criminology.
III-Historical and epistemological analysis of the scientific status of these disciplines and their relations.
IV- Specific analysis of central concepts related to crime: "danger", "risk", "risk assessment", "criminal personality", "psychopathy", "sociopathy", "antisocial personality" ...
V- The great nosographic framework and their relation with the criminal behavior: psychoses, neuroses and psychopaths.
VI- Psychopathy: classifications and perspectives.
VII- Relations between Law, Criminal Justice and Psychopathology.

- Two written tests.
