Main Aims/Objectives
This curricular unit seeks to deepen the issues related to the perception and experiences of men and women, as victims and offenders. Particularly, it seeks to examine the extent to which criminal behavior varies according to gender, exploring the relationships between gender, crime and victimization. It also intends to explore the performance of the criminal justice system and formal social control bodies, from a gender perspective.
Specific Aims/Objectives
Specifically, it is intended:
1. To understand the specifics of female criminality;
2. To understand the specifics of male victimization;
3. To foster the capacity for critical reflection around the importance of gender issues in the field of criminology, particularly, with regard to the performance of the criminal justice system.
Skills to be acquired
- To critically identify, analyze and reflect on the central concepts and the main theoretical perspectives around crime and gender discrimination;
- To compare and contrast the different approaches explored, reflecting around their main contributions and limitations;
- To critically reflect on the performance of the instances of the formal social control system and the justice system, through a gender perspective.

1. Introduction to the study of crime and gender discrimination

2.1 The transgressive woman (historical and social context)
2.2 Traditional approaches (biological and sociological perspectives)
2.3 Theories of feminist criminology
2.4 Current trends
2.5 Female crime and different types of crime
3. Male victimization
3.1 Men as victims of crime: explanation of male victimization patterns
3.2 The justice system´s response to male victims
4. The influence of gender considerations on the performance of the criminal justice system
5. Formal social control systems and it´s relationship to gender:
5.1 Differentiated intervention according to gender (police, prisons, social reintegration)
5.2 Gender stereotypes in the practice of professional activity in these contexts
