Main Aims/Objectives
The main objective is to develop a reflection on the main continuities and discontinuities of Portuguese foreign policy. Starting from a theoretical framework, we will discuss the historical pattern of contemporary Portuguese foreign policy, its formulation process, its internal and external constraints, as well as the ideational and normative factors present in the definition of national interests and the strategic axes of Portuguese diplomatic activity.
Specific Aims/Objectives
The specific objectives of this curricular unit are the knowledge and understanding of the main concepts, contexts, doctrines, and instruments of Portugal’s Contemporary Foreign Policy.
Skills to be acquired
Acquire the appropriate skills to identify and select the relevant information about the role of Portugal in the World (XX and XXI centuries). To apply, critically and imaginatively, the concepts and approaches studied, allowing developing aptitudes to investigate Portuguese foreign policy issues to conduct master´s theses.
Teaching Procedures
Teaching based on participatory classes, with mandatory interventions on specific cases of Portuguese foreign policy. Study and discussion of case-study and foreign policy situations in a seminar regime. The orientation of the research papers.

1.1. The historical pattern of contemporary Portuguese foreign policy.
1.2. Portuguese foreign policy in the Estado Novo: the Salazarist period.
1.3. Portuguese foreign policy in the Estado Novo: the Marcellist period.
2. The Portuguese Foreign Policy in the Democratic Regime (1974-2016):
2.1. From the revolutionary period to the institutionalization of the democratic regime (1974 -1976);

4. The general balance of the Portuguese Foreign Policy.
Evaluation Type
A final exam. Continuous assessment Methodology. An individual final research paper about Portuguese foreign policy in the XXI century, with 4000 to 8000 words.
Teaching Resources
In classes are used the audiovisual and computer media made available by the University, namely, through the use of the overhead projector, data show, television and video.
