Main Aims/Objectives
The course unit on "International Politics. History of the Present" aims at introducing students to an overview of contemporary international politics in order for them to understand the increasing complexity of today´s International Society, affected by profound changes in recent decades, the globalization of political, economic, social and cultural life that transformed the world into a "global village".
Specific Aims/Objectives
To analyse and discuss the major themes of contemporary International Politics, in order to provide Master students with the appropriate theoretical framework and empirical work they intended to develop.
Skills to be acquired
To acquire the expertise to identify, describe and select relevant information within Politics and International Relations, in light of a set of concepts that will be indispensable for the students preparation of Master´s thesis, in order to develop their critical , their theoretical training and a taste for research.
Teaching Procedures
Self-learning methodology based on participatory classes with mandatory personal and oral interventions; reflection on concrete cases of International Politics; study of different themes previously announced, in light of selected bibliography; access to all students of the works presented in class, which, once analyzed and criticized, will be made available in Moodle.

1.1. Definition of the methodology to be followed
1.2. Definition of the themes of the work to be undertaken by Master students
2. International System based on a mitigated bipolarity
3. A multipolar International System in its non-military components
3.1. Multipolarity empirically operated under the influence of several factors:
3.1.1. Political and economic multipolarity
3.1.2. Economic, scientific and technical multipolarity
3.1.3. Cultural and spiritual multipolarity
4. An International System in crisis - new order or new world disorder?
5. Perspectives and foresight - the International System in the XXI century
5.1. Optimistic / pessimistic scenarios
5.2. New threats and risks to international peace and security
6. General overview of the present International Politics
Evaluation Type
The students´ evaluation of this course unit, bearing in mind that will work as a seminar, will take into account attendance, class participation and especially the final written work.
Teaching Resources
Classes will make use of cartographic, audiovisual and computer means provided by the University, namely, through the use of maps, overhead projectors, video projector and TV.
