Main Aims/Objectives

Industrial Economics is concerned with the working of markets and industries, in particular the way firms compete with each other. It is an independent discipline of microeconomics because analyses the strategies of firms, this is, the respective interactions in the market: price competition, product positioning, research and development, as examples. Industrial Economics is in fact the Economics of Imperfect Competition.

Specific Aims/Objectives

The main aim of the course is to provide students with a set of tools that they can use in their professional activity. For this purpose are selected some topics centered on the study of real markets, more precisely, in the study of imperfect markets.

Skills to be acquired

Identify and measure the different market structures.
Identify different strategic interactions at the level of oligopoly models.
Analyze the strategic commitment.
Study the dynamic strategies of prices competition.

Teaching Procedures

In practical classes the exposed material is always accompanied by an illustration with real cases. The tutorial lessons are designed to clarify questions and practical discussion of the issues taught in practical classes. It will be shown to students appropriate readings within the Course Bibliography as a way to complement the content transmitted in class.

Evaluation Type

The evaluation is in accordance with the "Regulamento Geral de Avaliação de Conhecimentos para o 2º Ciclo de Estudos da Universidade Lusíada". Accomplishment, presentation and discussion of research work, more a final exam with a rating of 60% and 40% respectively.
