Main Aims/Objectives

- Know how to read, interpret and insert artistic objects in time/space.
- Develop skills to relate concepts and methodologies for study and research.
- Understand the importance of Art History in a bachelor’s/master’s degree in Architecture.

Specific Aims/Objectives

- Equip the student with vocabulary, concepts and a whole set of operative tools that insert him in the object, methods and purposes of Art History.
- Promote direct contact with some artistic objects near and farther away.
- Within the multiple possibilities of artistic practice, Architecture and the Fine Arts will be privileged as an artistic object to be analysed.

Skills to be acquired

- Know how to make a reading sheet, a critical review, write an article and/or a small theoretical work for this or another curricular unit.
- Be able to discern and apply the following concepts: Art, Artist, Artistic object, Art History, Modern, Classical, Contemporary, Modern and Postmodern in Architecture.

Teaching Procedures

- Classes will be colloquial, using the exploration of bibliography and examples chosen for analysis. Open to debate and to the presentation and defence of papers (individual and group), when properly guided. Whenever possible, they will be complemented by study visits, conferences and other relevant activities outside the classroom.

Programme

1. Introduction to Art History: For what and why.
2. Contexts and concepts.
2.1 The History of Art as a science and its methods.
2.2 The invention of Art: a concept that transforms with times and places. The specificity of Architecture and Plastic Arts.
2.3 The (in)convenience of the definitions: Modern, Contemporary, Postmodern. Classic.
3. The so-called Modern movement in Architecture. The three unavoidable figures of the Modern movement (F. L. Wright, W. Gropius, Le Corbusier).
4. The persistence of the Classical alongside and in the Modern movement in Architecture. Case exploration.
5. Modern Architecture as dogma, the new utopias, the critical revision of the Modern and the Postmodern in Architecture. Case exploration.
6. The importance of Art History as a fundamental link in artistic making.

Evaluation Type

- Two written tests with consultations.
- Critical review. Article.
- Attendance and active participation in tasks inside and outside the classroom (tutorials, conferences, study visits, etc.).

Teaching Resources

- From traditional projection methods to the most modern ones.
- Films, colloquia, exhibitions (inside the university or outside, but accessible in museums, galleries, foundations and fairs, etc.) and study visits (in the region, in Portugal and abroad).
