Main Aims/Objectives

Introduce the issues inherent to construction, its formalization and communication in the project.
Sensitize the student to the relationships between the material and construction techniques associated with construction processes.
Develop in the student a critical sense, through the generic study of the building, which allows him to understand the role of the material in the formalization of an architectural discourse: the constructed space as a result of technical issues and the architect´s creative act.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Provide the student with instruments of constructive representation and essential objective knowledge in the field of characterization of materials and techniques related to construction processes, for a critical and coherent use in the process/method of project design and analysis/understanding of Architecture.
Relationship between materiality, space and architectural form.

Skills to be acquired

Carrying out survey work and analysis of existing constructions for interpretation and reflection on construction issues related to the material and associated construction processes.
Know how to correctly interpret the various parts that make up a building.

Teaching Procedures

The works are developed through the articulation of theoretical and practical moments. In theoretical classes, the exercises to be carried out will be presented, the themes and information necessary for the progress of the work will be introduced, as well as periodic presentations and discussion of results. In practical classes, the proposed exercises will be implemented and executed, presented, analyzed, criticized and discussed, in groups or individually, the progress of the work.

1. Introduction to the construction issue.

2. From project to work: introduction to space representation and legibility issues
designed.

3. Introduction to elementary building systems.
3.1. Foundations.

3.5. Ceilings.
3.6. Covers.
3.7. Interior walls.
3.9. Interior stairs.
3.10. Exterior frames.
3.11. Interior frames.

Evaluation Type

Due to the nature of the discipline, the assessment will be continuous and permanent. In this sense, attendance will be taken into account, participation in classes, regularity and continuity of work, the response to the problems and challenges launched. The continuous assessment will also include two written tests and assignments, according to the school calendar. The fundamental moments of established assessment will also be fulfilled: the Attendance Test and the Final Exam.

Teaching Resources

To achieve the required objectives and skills, the following will be used
teaching resources:
- Computers;
- Specialized bibliography available in the media library and library of Universidade Lusíada;
- Indication of fundamental texts for the learning and elaboration of research work;
- Multimedia material (documentaries, images, etc.);
- Laboratory classes that encourage research on building systems and materials.
