Main Aims/Objectives
To identify the frames of structural relationship between spatial morphology and socio-cultural configurations;
To specify some key concepts for decoding urban space and respective territorial dynamics;
To reflect on the relationships between old/new territorialities and the (dis)organization of the social.
Specific Aims/Objectives
To know the dynamics of urban spaces and their relationship;
To identify models of socio-spatial organization of cities;
To reflect on the impact of urbanization models on the organization of territories and social life.
Skills to be acquired
Objectivity and analytical, reflective and critical attitude towards models of socio-spatial organization.
Know urban trends and models and understand their relationship with the social, economic, political and cultural characteristics of societies.
Identify and present spatial morphological solutions adjusted to the challenges that cities and contemporary societies face and think about prospective frameworks for urban-metropolitan development
Teaching Procedures
Theoretical-practical classes of expository character for the presentation of the theoretical contents of the curricular unit´s program.
Reflection classes and thematic discussion based on the analysis of scientific texts, press articles and documentaries presented in class. Orientation classes for exposition/defense and discussion of theoretical-practical work developed by students.
Programme
1- Understand the cities and the urban. Concepts.
1.1. The city and the urban phenomenon;
1.2. Cities: morphologies, functions and socio-spatial structures;
1.3. Agents and dynamics of urban transformation: the case of Portuguese cities.
2- Old cities, new metropolises: old and new conceptual challenges in the relationship between society and territory. Transformations.
2.1. From the industrial city to the networked territories;
2.2. From the centrality of the industrial city to the new centralities of the global city: territorialization of powers and centralities (centrality, polycentrality, supercentrality, dissemination, decentralization and recentralization);
2.3. From socio-spatial fragmentation and disputed urban territories: fortification and gentrification of the city.
3- Cities, identities and promotion of territories:
3.1. Intercity competition and promotion of territories;
3.2. Heritage, city images and urban tourism;
3.3. Images of the city, architecture and spectacle cities.
Evaluation Type
The evaluation will focus on the Frequency and Exam tests carried out for this purpose, in addition to two interim tests.
Teaching Resources
Supporting thematic texts, documentaries and reports alluding to the themes of the syllabus, teaching materials (slides, specific bibliography).
