Main Aims/Objectives

In this course of Economics of Innovation students may achieve a deep knowledge on innovation systems with an emphasis on the two aspects leading social change with an impact on economics: sustainability and digitalization.

Specific Aims/Objectives

At the end of the course unit the learner is expected to be able to unsderstand what is a national and regional system of innovation and how the european policies on climate change, industrial production and IT impact all sectors of activity.

Skills to be acquired

Students are expected to develop the following skills:
- Knowledge of national and regional systems of innovation in the present context;
- Knowledge about origin and evolution of the sustainability model of development;
- New technologies and IT and thir impact on innovation systems;
- capacities of analysis and decision;.
- capacities to develop teamwork.

Teaching Procedures

Classes have a theoretical component in terms of the explanation of theories and concepts and a practical side of debate over documents, from the European Union and from case studies. There will be also space for analytical practices over interventions from policy makers representatives and entrepreneurs on topics lectured.

I - Innation - concept and systems
The national and regional systems of innovation.
The evolutionary perspective of innovation within economic theory.

II - Innovation and Sustainability
Concept and evolution of the model of sustainable development.
Climate change and the renewable energies model.
The circular economy.
Innovation in the context of the European Union: the Green Deal,

III - Innovation and the Digital Age
New technologies and IT.
SMART regions and SMART cities as instruments of economic and sustainable development.




Evaluation Type

Assessment is based on two written tests and the participation in class, namely the explanation amd critical analysis of documents, case studies and interventions from Invited policy maker representatives and managers.
