Main Aims/Objectives

To understand and apply the appropriate inferential statistics procedures, through the
use of IBM SPSS Statistical (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) software .

Specific Aims/Objectives

To select and apply, critical and reasoned, the most appropriate statistical procedure.
To present and correctly interpret the results.
To understand and use statistical language, particularly with regard to reading and writing research
reports, according to the APA style.

Skills to be acquired

Using IBM SPSS Statistics for registration and data analysis.
Understanding and application of descriptive and inferential statistics.
Understanding and use of statistical language.

Teaching Procedures

Theoretical -Practical classes using the lecture method and problem solving / practical exercises
in IBM SPSS Statistics.
Carrying out brief practice works on the application of knowledge and skills, involving statistical analysis and respective report writing according to the APA style.

Programme

1. Introduction to inferential statistics
- Sample and population: notion of estimator
- Theoretical probability distribution: Normal distribution.
- Calculating Z scores and confidence intervals
- Z score as an indicator of the probability of a score

2. Hypothesis theory
- Formulating hypotheses: null and alternative hypotheses
- Dependent and independent variables
- One and two tailed tests

3. Statistical significance
- Probabilities of significance (p value)
- Effect size and statistical power
- Statistical errors (type I and type II)

4. Parametric tests
- Student´s t-test for comparing the means of two independent samples
- Student´s t-test for comparing the means of two paired samples

5. Non-parametric tests
- Mann Whitney test for two independent samples
- Wilcoxon test for two paired samples

Evaluation Type

Two written tests and a written assignment.
