Main Aims/Objectives

Following the curricular unit of the Statistics (in the 2nd semester of the 1st year), the purpose of this course is the continuous students´ knowledge acquisition of a set of inferential statistical methods.

Specific Aims/Objectives

To acquire skills and knowledge that allow them to understand and conduct quantitative studies, using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Covariance Analysis (ANCOVA), Linear Regression and also non-parametric statistics.
Apply knowledge using IBM SPSS statistical software, in order for students to continue to acquire skills in using this data analysis software.

Skills to be acquired

- To demonstrate competencies of quantitative analysis using IBM SPSS

Teaching Procedures

Theoretical-practical classes using the expository method and example of problem solving / practical exercises in the field of psychology (using variables from various areas of psychology) using the IBM SPSS Statistics. In tutorial orientation classes, short assignments of knowledge and skills are applied, involving statistical analysis and report writing according to APA standards. Classes take place in a computer lab.

Programme

1. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA):
ii) Inter-subjects (one-way)
iii) Intra-subjects (repeated measures)

2. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA)

3. Regression Analysis
i)Concept of linear correlation and its graphical representation
ii)Simple linear regression (1 predictor)
iii) Multiple linear regression (2 or more predictors)

4. Non-parametric statistics:
i)Kruskal Wallis test for more than two independent samples
ii)Friedman test for more than two paired samples

Evaluation Type

The course is evaluated through 2 mini tests throughout the semester.
In addition, there is a written work that consists of a quantitative report on a supplied database, written according to APA standards.
Students must be present in 70% of classes to be eligible to continuous assessment.
