Main Aims/Objectives

This course aims to allow students to analyze and reflect on the main models and interventions in the field of educational psychology. In addition, this unit aims to provide students with knowledge about the main areas of action of school and educational psychologists. Finally, the discipline will allow for greater awareness of the opportunities, constraints and emerging areas within the profession.

Specific Aims/Objectives

1) Know the scope of intervention of Educational Psychology;
2) Identify the main current intervention models in Educational Psychology;
3) Understand the evolution and present situation of this professional area;
4) Identify the main areas of intervention of a School and Education Psychologist;
5) Identify future job opportunities in the area of ​​School Psychology and Education.

Skills to be acquired


Synthesis of the object of study of School Psychology and Education and its main interventions.
Analysis of the main intervention models in School Psychology and Education.
Understanding the role of the family in the context of School Psychology and Education.
Develop and apply assessment and intervention skills in the field of Educational Psychology, considering the multiple actors and contexts.

Exposition classes.
Practical exercises.
Interviews with educational psychologists (online and / or face-to-face).
Group work with oral presentation.
Case studies.

2. The educational psychologist and his duties.
2.1. Generalities and specificities of Educational Psychology.
2.2. Psychological consultation models and consulting models.
2.3. Ecological interventions.

3. The School and Educational Psychologist in Portugal
3.1. Legal framework for School Psychologists and reference documents: Profile of the Psychologist in Educational Context and Technical Reference for School Psychologists.

4. Interventions by school and educational psychologists in the school context.
4.1. Inclusive Education: evolution of intervention models.
4.2. Vocational psychology.
4.3. SocioEmotional Learning.
4.4. Learning to read and write.
4.5 Promotion of positive behaviors.

5. The educational psychologist and the family context.
5.1. The life cycle of the family.
5.2. Parenting educational styles.
