Main Aims/Objectives

This Course unit aims to provide students with Information Technology skills in particular in solving problems in the area of economics and management using spreadsheets, Information Systems models and relational databases. This Course unit aims also to provide students with an understanding of the role of Information Systems in organizations.

Specific Aims/Objectives

It is intended that students achieve the following objectives:
Be able to solve problems in the area of economics and management with spreadsheets.
Acquire skills in conceptual modeling of Information Systems.
Know how to create, implement and use relational databases.
Learn how to use information and communication technology (ICT).
Understand the role of Information Systems (IS) in organizations.

Know the role of Information Systems (IS) in organizations.

Teaching Procedures

Classes are theoretical and practical. All the classrooms are equipped with computers where keynotes and computer applications are presented. Students can individually, on their computers, follow the presentations and solve the proposed exercises.

Programme

Use of spreadsheets (MS Excel). Conditional Formatting. Filters. PivotTables. Building models to solve problems in the area of economics. Designing models of Information Systems.
The relational model. Concepts of normalization and primary key. Foreign keys and referential integrity. Construction of class models in UML.
MS-Access. Tables, forms, queries and reports.
Evolution of IT / IS in organizations.
The role and importance of the IS. Transaction Processing Systems (TPS), Management Information Systems (MIS), Decision-Support Systems (DSS) and Executive Support Systems (ESS). Information Architecture. Planning Information Systems. ERP - Enterprise Resource Planning, CRM - Customer Relationship Management, SCM - Supply Chain Management. Data processing, data analysis and reporting (OLAP, Data Warehouses, Datamining). Business Intelligence. Knowledge management. Business and electronic commerce.

Evaluation Type

Evaluation is based on continuous assessment, including attendance, participation, tests (2), as well as final exam.
When justified, an oral exam can be applied.

Teaching Resources

Video projector for presenting applications, fundamental concepts and examples. Students should solve exercises using classroom computers.
