Main Aims/Objectives

Stimulate the capacity for critical articulation between various scientific domains inherent to Theory and History, related to the scientific domain of design;
Understand the place of Art History in the development of human thought and in the specific context of Design.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Equip students with tools and knowledge that allow them to produce scientific knowledge in the field of design;
Knowing how to identify movements, authors and strategic lines of each of the main movements that generated groups and/or schools, trends addressed, considering the context;
Understand Art History within the broader context of cultural, social, political and economic development.

Skills to be acquired

Identify and relate specific concepts of the History of Art;
Understand the nature of an artistic object;
Knowing how to analyze an artistic object in aesthetic and historical terms;
Understand the evolution of Art in a socio-cultural perspective;
Identify, analyze and understand artistic movements and currents, as well as their main mentors.

Teaching Procedures

Expositional method with use of examples of works of art, followed by critical analyze and reflection.

Programme

1- Introduction to the fundamental concepts of Art History: The Artistic Object in a diachronic perspective.
2- The French Revolution and the Contemporary Age (1789-);
3- The historical and cultural context of the 20th and 19th centuries: Photography and its role in Art;
4- Main artistic movements of the 20th and 19th centuries;
5- The historical and cultural context of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Art Nouveau, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, and De Stijl movements;
6- Post-World War II Art. Main movements;
7- The Prelude to Art in the 19th and 21st Centuries.

Evaluation Type

It will be in accordance with the General Regulation of Knowledge Assessment of Universidade Lusíada, through two written tests and one frequency at the end of the semester.
