Main Aims/Objectives

The Design II course aims to prepare students to:
- Consolidate and master the design methodology;
- Know and apply the fundamentals of three-dimensional design;
- Master the grammar of three-dimensional representation;
- Develop awareness of the professional context;
- Communicate the project technically.

Specific Aims/Objectives

- Understand the projects and constraints of materialization/production;
- Study new socially responsible and sustainable practices and behaviors;
- Develop and rigorously present three-dimensional projects on a human scale;
- Study the physical, chromatic, tactile, aesthetic, and emotional properties of materials;
- Evaluate and select eco-friendly production and finishing technologies.

Skills to be acquired

- Formulate the problem and emerging questions;
- Apply research methodologies in the formulation of concepts and ideas;
- List the state of the art and case studies;
- Engage in critical reflection on their own project;
- To delimit the scope of the research to an appropriate level of detail;
- To present Design Projects with rigorously planned research and methodologies.

Teaching Procedures

Theoretical/Practical Classes:
- Presentation and demonstration of the program content through audiovisual resources,
bibliography and webography;
- Comparative and reflective analyses of projects for classroom discussions;
- Experimentation and practical application of the program content through the completion of practical work.
Tutorial Guidance:
- Monitoring and guidance of students´ individual work;
- Use of the Moodle platform for content presentation.

Programme

P1 - 2 weeks
Research and framing of projects by 10 designers/artists for discussion (20 slides).
Research in Designboom and Wallpaper Magazine (online).

P2 - 3 weeks
Reverse engineering (electronic equipment to be defined)

P3 - 4 weeks
Soft mobility (design and production of a skateboard/longboard)

P4 - 5 weeks
Furniture Design

P5 - 5 weeks
Urban Product Design: Parks and school routes for children

P6 - 5 weeks
Furniture design in partnership with Dita company

P7 - 5 weeks
CMP partnership

All the previously mentioned themes will be developed in parallel with the following resources:
critical analysis of examples; design methodologies; descriptive project reports; means of realization/model making.

Evaluation Type

The evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the General Evaluation Regulations and the Exceptional Regime of Continuous Evaluation of Lusíada University. Of the continuous evaluation criteria, in addition to attendance, participation, and commitment in classes, the evaluation will focus mainly on the process, execution, presentation, and support of the 7 work proposals referenced above and, lastly, on the attendance tests.
