Main Aims/Objectives
1. Understand the integration of design as part of history;
2. Demonstrate the multiplicity inscribed in design practice;
3. Address the concepts arising from political, social and economic factors as generators of design argument over time and ranging from the Industrial Revolution to the present.
Specific Aims/Objectives
1. Provide students with tools and knowledge that will allow them to produce scientific knowledge in the field of design;
2. Know how to identify author movements and strategic lines of each of the main movements that generated groups and/or schools, trends addressed, considering the context;
3. Reflect on the background of artistic avant-gardes and their connection to current times.
Skills to be acquired
1. Recognize/relate the main trends in modern and contemporary design;
2. Knowing how to analyze historical moments and contextualize them, considering their contribution to the innovation of thought and design practice;
3. Reflect on the scope of design in social praxis and in the formation of mentalities throughout the 20th century;
4. Identify, analyze and understand the artistic movements and currents linked to design, as well as their main mentors.
Teaching Procedures
The methodology is based on a historical approach, which crosses social, political, artistic and economic factors, as determining and justifying factors of the various movements that characterize the evolution of Design. Visually analyze the artifacts that punctuate these moments, enhancing the capacity for recognition/critical thinking about the subject under study.
It is intended to simultaneously use bibliographic resources and other digital documental sources.
Programme
1. The Industrial Revolution and its consequences for Design (1850-1920);
2. Revolution and Vanguard (1915-1930);
3. The 1929 economic crisis and the principles of Industrial Design (1930-1945);
4. The 50´s style;
5. Alternative design or counter-design (60s and 70s);
6. From the 1980s to current trends.
Evaluation Type
The assessment will be carried out in accordance with the General Regulation of Knowledge Assessment of Universidade Lusíada, through two written tests plus frequency at the end of the semester.
