Main Aims/Objectives
Understand the organization and structure of criminalistic systems and criminal investigation;
Understanding and critical reflection on the role of criminalistics and criminal investigation in criminal proceedings;
Knowledge of the methodologies and techniques associated to the practice of criminal investigation and criminalistics;
Acquisition of critical capital on criminal justice products.
Specific Aims/Objectives
Understand the evolutionary process of Portuguese society, and its repercussion on social systems, and institutions;
Know how to identify, differentiate and articulate the process of constructing the concepts of criminalistics and criminal investigation in the system in which they are inserted;
Identify and distinguish the valences of a scientific or forensic police laboratory structure;
To know the criminological products resulting from the practice of criminalistics and criminal investigation.
Skills to be acquired
Know how to identify the elements that make up the concepts of criminalistics and criminal investigation;
Understand how criminalistics and research intersect and merge;
To be able to analyze critically the practices, the models and the organizational structures where the criminalistic one enters, as well as the criminal investigation;
To know the products of criminology and criminal investigation, and how they become objects of interest in criminology.
Teaching Procedures
Theoretical lectures with audiovisual support.
Practical classes for development, presentation and study of problems and practical cases.
Tutorial, and oral presentation of written assignments and interventions.

1. Society, governance, security and justice
a) Society and need for control
b) Legality and order - the rule of law
c) History and governance models in Portugal
d) Interdependence and autonomy among the pillars of democracy
e) The Internal Security System, the Justice System, and the Criminal Investigation Organization
2. Criminal and criminal investigation
a) The concept of criminalistics, criminal investigation, and scientific police
b) The method of criminalistics and criminal investigation - the centrality on the clue
c) Precautionary measures. The judicial inspection
d) The problem of contamination
e) The examinations. Identification of the clue; chain of custody of material evidence
f) The skills. Interpretation and intelligibility. Forensic laboratory areas
3. Inclusion in the Justice System
a) The process, its phases and cadence
b) The actors - role and positioning
c) Means of obtaining and evidence
d) Criminological products
e) Interventions between science, criminalistics and criminal investigation
Evaluation Type
Two tests required.
Two written thematic papers in group, with oral exposition.
Assiduity.
Teaching Resources
Bibliography and legislation indicated.
Consultation of monographs and articles.
Use of video projectors and other materials, some of which are available to students on the Moodle electronic platform of Universidade Lusíada.
